GCSE Biology exam guide (2027)

GCSE Biology (9-1) is the separate-science biology GCSE, often called triple science biology. Whichever board your school uses, you sit two written papers of 1 hour 45 minutes at the end of Year 11. This guide uses AQA 8461, the most widely taken specification, and notes where Pearson Edexcel (1BI0) and OCR Gateway (J247) differ.

What is on each AQA paper

  • Paper 1: Cell biology, Organisation, Infection and response, and Bioenergetics (AQA topics 1 to 4).
  • Paper 2: Homeostasis and response, Inheritance, variation and evolution, and Ecology (AQA topics 5 to 7).
  • Both papers mix multiple-choice, structured, short-answer and extended-response (6-mark) questions.
  • The 10 required practicals (including microscopy, osmosis, food tests, enzymes, photosynthesis, reaction time and quadrat sampling) are assessed through questions on the written papers. There is no coursework.
  • Maths skills such as magnification, percentages, rates, means and reading graphs make up a part of the marks, so practise calculations as well as recall. Revise topic by topic with our GCSE Biology practice questions.

Tiers and grades

You are entered for either Foundation tier, which awards grades 1 to 5, or Higher tier, which awards grades 4 to 9. Both papers must be taken at the same tier. Higher papers include harder content such as the inverse square law, negative feedback with thyroxine and adrenaline, and more demanding calculations.

Grade 4 is a standard pass and grade 5 a strong pass. Grade boundaries are not fixed: the exam board sets them after marking each series, based on the difficulty of that year's papers. Use previous boundaries only as a rough guide and aim to score around 70% on full practice papers to give yourself a margin.

A 10-week revision plan

  1. Week 1: Cell biology. Learn cell structures, magnification and the osmosis practical; do 20 practice questions.
  2. Week 2: Organisation. Enzymes, digestion, food tests, the heart and blood vessels, plant transport.
  3. Week 3: Infection and response, plus monoclonal antibodies and plant disease.
  4. Week 4: Bioenergetics. Photosynthesis, limiting-factor graphs and respiration. Sit a timed Paper 1.
  5. Week 5: Homeostasis and response. Nervous system, hormones, blood glucose, the kidney and plant hormones.
  6. Week 6: Inheritance, variation and evolution. Meiosis, DNA, Punnett squares and classification.
  7. Week 7: Ecology. Sampling, cycles, biodiversity and trophic levels. Sit a timed Paper 2.
  8. Week 8: Required practicals. Write out the method, variables and a risk for each of the 10.
  9. Week 9: Mixed full papers under timed conditions; mark them with the mark scheme and log every mistake.
  10. Week 10: Re-test the topics in your mistakes log and do short flashcard sessions daily.

How to pick up marks

  • Allow about 1 minute per mark and leave 5 minutes to check.
  • For 6-mark answers, write a logical sequence of linked points; examiners reward clear reasoning more than length.
  • Use precise vocabulary: denatured, partially permeable, resistant, vasoconstriction.
  • Show working and units in every calculation; a correct method can earn marks even with a wrong final answer.

Frequently asked questions

How many papers are there in GCSE Biology?

Two. With AQA each is 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 100 marks. Edexcel uses the same timings with 100 marks per paper, and OCR Gateway uses 90 marks per paper.

Is there a formula sheet in GCSE Biology?

No. Equation sheets are provided in GCSE Physics and Combined Science, not in separate Biology, so learn the equations you need, such as magnification.

What grade is a pass in GCSE Biology?

Grade 4 is a standard pass and grade 5 a strong pass. Grade boundaries change every series, so check the board's published boundaries after results day.

Can I resit GCSE Biology in November?

No. November resits are only for GCSE Maths and English Language. GCSE Biology is available in the May/June series only.

Should I take Foundation or Higher tier?

Your teachers decide based on your mock results. Foundation caps at grade 5; Higher starts at grade 4, so a student working at grade 5 or above usually takes Higher.

Can I take GCSE Biology as a private candidate?

Yes, at an exam centre that accepts private candidates. Ask the centre how you will complete the required practicals before you enter.
