How to pass the Functional Skills Maths L2 exam

  • Spend the 25-minute non-calculator section on written methods you trust: column multiplication, short division, simple percentages and fractions of amounts. It is worth about a quarter of the marks.
  • Most calculator-section questions are multi-step problems in context, such as costs, plans and timetables. Underline every number and condition in the question before you start.
  • Always show your working, and write a clear final answer with units. When a question asks you to make a decision ('is there enough paint?'), back it up with a calculation and say yes or no.
  • Round sensibly for the real-life context: you cannot buy 5.76 tins of paint, so you need 6. Read whether the question wants you to round up or down.
  • Check every answer for common sense. A 15% discount should make the price smaller, and a room in a house is not 400 m long.

Sample questions with answers

These are the questions in the free test above, with answers. Try the test first. You'll learn more by getting some wrong.

1. Work out 18 - 3 × 4 + 2.
Answer: 8. Multiplication comes first: 3 × 4 = 12. Then work left to right: 18 - 12 + 2 = 8. Working straight left to right gives (18 - 3) × 4 + 2 = 62, which is wrong.
2. The temperature at 6 am is -7 °C. By noon it has risen by 12 °C. What is the temperature at noon?
Answer: 5 °C. Start at -7 and count up 12: -7 + 12 = 5 °C. It takes 7 degrees to reach 0, then 5 more.
3. A stadium has 4,875 seats. What is 4,875 rounded to 2 significant figures?
Answer: 4,900. The first two significant figures are 4 and 8. The next digit is 7, which is 5 or more, so round up to 4,900. Keep the zeros so the number keeps its size.
4. A coat costs £80. In a sale the price is reduced by 15%. What is the sale price?
Answer: £68. 10% of £80 is £8 and 5% is £4, so 15% is £12. Sale price = £80 - £12 = £68. £12 is only the discount, not the new price.
5. A monthly bill rises from £250 to £290. What is the percentage increase?
Answer: 16%. Increase = £290 - £250 = £40. Percentage increase = 40 ÷ 250 × 100 = 16%. Always divide by the original amount; dividing by 290 gives the wrong answer of 13.8%.
6. Which of these is the largest: 3/5, 0.65, 63% or 5/8?
Answer: 0.65. Convert all to decimals: 3/5 = 0.6, 0.65, 63% = 0.63, 5/8 = 0.625. The largest is 0.65.
7. A recipe for 4 people uses 300 g of flour. How much flour is needed for 10 people?
Answer: 750 g. For 1 person: 300 ÷ 4 = 75 g. For 10 people: 75 × 10 = 750 g.
8. A van hire firm uses the formula C = 25 + 0.4m, where C is the cost in pounds and m is the number of miles. What is the cost for 120 miles?
Answer: £73. Substitute m = 120: C = 25 + 0.4 × 120 = 25 + 48 = £73. Do the multiplication before the addition.
9. A train leaves at 10:45 and the journey takes 2 hours 35 minutes. What time does it arrive?
Answer: 13:20. 10:45 + 2 hours = 12:45. Add 15 minutes to reach 13:00, then the remaining 20 minutes: 13:20. Times do not work like decimals, so 45 + 35 minutes is 1 hour 20 minutes, not 80.
10. A coach travels 150 km in 2 hours 30 minutes. What is its average speed?
Answer: 60 km/h. 2 hours 30 minutes = 2.5 hours (30 minutes is half an hour, not 0.3). Speed = 150 ÷ 2.5 = 60 km/h.
11. A floor is 4.5 m by 3.2 m. Flooring is sold in packs that each cover 2.5 m². How many packs must be bought?
Answer: 6 packs. Area = 4.5 × 3.2 = 14.4 m². Packs needed = 14.4 ÷ 2.5 = 5.76. You can only buy whole packs and 5 would not be enough, so round up to 6.
12. A water tank is a cuboid 2 m long, 1.5 m wide and 0.8 m deep. How many litres does it hold when full? (1 m³ = 1,000 litres)
Answer: 2,400 litres. Volume = 2 × 1.5 × 0.8 = 2.4 m³. Convert: 2.4 × 1,000 = 2,400 litres.
13. Find the mean of these delivery times in minutes: 6, 15, 9, 20, 10.
Answer: 12. Add them: 6 + 15 + 9 + 20 + 10 = 60. Divide by how many there are: 60 ÷ 5 = 12 minutes. (10 is the median and 14 is the range.)
14. A table shows waiting times: 0 to 10 minutes, frequency 4; 10 to 20 minutes, frequency 6. Using midpoints, estimate the mean waiting time.
Answer: 11 minutes. Midpoints are 5 and 15. Total = 5 × 4 + 15 × 6 = 20 + 90 = 110. Divide by the total frequency, 4 + 6 = 10: 110 ÷ 10 = 11 minutes. Dividing by the number of groups (2) gives the wrong answer of 55.
15. A bag contains 3 red, 4 blue and 5 green counters. One counter is taken at random. What is the probability that it is not green?
Answer: 7/12. There are 3 + 4 + 5 = 12 counters, and 3 + 4 = 7 are not green. P(not green) = 7/12. 7/5 is more than 1, so it cannot be a probability.
